Learner driver insurance
Learner driver insurance for practice in a family car
Lessons teach the skills; practice makes them stick. Cover a provisional licence holder on a family car for an hour, a weekend or a few weeks, without touching the owner's policy.
From £22.62 for one day, including Insurance Premium Tax. No admin fees, no renewals.
Good for
- Learners practising with a parent or friend between professional lessons.
- A final hour of practice on the morning of a driving test.
- Intensive courses where the learner drives a family car every day for a fortnight.
- Learners who want cover in their own name rather than as a named driver.
Owner's policy untouched
The learner is insured on their own policy, so a bump during practice does not affect the owner's no-claims bonus.
Flexible lengths
A single hour before a test, or four weeks of intensive practice. Buy what you need, when you need it.
Comprehensive cover
Damage to the car is covered, not only damage to other people's property.
The rules for learner cover
The learner must hold a UK provisional licence and be aged 18 or over. The car must be worth under £50,000. Cover is for cars only, for social use, and the learner must be supervised at all times by someone who is 21 or over and has held a full licence for at least three years.
L plates must be displayed front and rear, and the learner cannot drive on motorways unless accompanied by an approved driving instructor in a car with dual controls.
What happens when they pass
A learner policy is valid only while the driver holds a provisional licence. Once they pass, the policy no longer covers them, so buy a new policy as a full licence holder if they want to keep driving that day.
The standard excess is £500 (£1,000 for drivers under 25). You can reduce it to £250 with the excess reduction option at the quote stage. Because the policy is yours and separate from any annual insurance, a claim on it is handled here and does not touch the vehicle owner's no-claims bonus.

Questions
Learner driver insurance: common questions
- How much is learner driver insurance?
- Learner cover carries a higher rate than a full licence, and younger drivers pay more. As a guide, a day of cover for a learner in a standard car starts from £22.62 including Insurance Premium Tax; the quote shows the exact figure for your details.
- Who can supervise a learner?
- Anyone aged 21 or over who has held a full licence for the type of car being driven for at least three years. They must be fit to drive themselves.
- Can a learner be insured on a van or motorbike?
- No. Learner cover on this policy is for cars only.
- Does the learner need to be a named driver on the owner's policy?
- No. This is a separate policy in the learner's own name. The owner's insurance is not involved and their no-claims bonus is not at risk.
- Can I buy cover just for the day of the test?
- Yes. Many people buy a few hours on test day to cover the drive to the test centre and a last practice run.
