Temporary van insurance

Temporary van insurance for moves, jobs and one-off trips

Borrowed or hired a van for a house move, a tip run or a week of work? Cover it for exactly as long as you have it, on a comprehensive policy in your own name.

From £21.78 for one day, including Insurance Premium Tax. No admin fees, no renewals.

Good for

  • Moving house in a borrowed or hired van.
  • Tradespeople using a colleague's van while their own is off the road.
  • Collecting furniture, a motorbike or a large purchase.
  • A few weeks of deliveries or seasonal work.
  • Driving a van you have just bought back from the seller.

Hours to weeks

A two-hour dash to the tip or four weeks on a job. Twelve durations to pick from.

Business use available

Select business use at the quote stage if the van is for work rather than moving your own belongings.

Breakdown for the long haul

Add breakdown and recovery for a few pounds so a loaded van never leaves you stranded.

Van cover, priced up front

Vans are rated a little higher than cars, and you will see that factor on your quote alongside the others. Nothing is hidden behind the payment page: the total shown is the total charged.

Cover is comprehensive, so damage to the van itself is included, not just damage you cause to other people.

Business use and loads

Choose social use if you are moving your own things, or business use if the van is for your work. Business use costs slightly more and is shown as a separate line on the quote.

The standard excess is £500 (£1,000 for drivers under 25). You can reduce it to £250 with the excess reduction option at the quote stage. Cover applies in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. For trips of a day or longer you can add the European driving extension.

Who can buy

Drivers aged 18 to 78 with a full UK, EU or EEA licence. Vehicles must be worth under £50,000, be roadworthy, and have valid tax and MOT where required. You need the owner's permission to drive.

Learner cover is for cars only, so provisional licence holders cannot be insured on a van.

Questions

Temporary van insurance: common questions

Can I insure a hire van on a temporary policy?
Yes, provided the hire company allows you to use your own insurance. Many do, and a short-term policy is often cheaper than the hire desk's daily cover. Check the hire agreement first.
Is there a weight or size limit?
The policy is designed for light commercial vans up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight, which covers everything from small car-derived vans to Luton and long-wheelbase panel vans.
Does it cover the goods in the van?
No. The policy covers the van and your liability to others. Belongings and cargo are not insured, so take care when loading and never leave valuables in an unattended van.
Can I get temporary van insurance for business use?
Yes. Select business use when you quote. It is not available with learner cover.
How quickly can I be on the road?
The quote takes about two minutes and cover can start within fifteen minutes of paying.
